Wow ! I was just searching the www. for information on my great grandfather George Whitfield Smith when I came upon your pic taken in the cave on Middle Caicos,T.C.I. I was in that cave in April 1998 and took pictures of the same graffiti. At the time I was there I had no idea of my extensive westindian heritage.George was my fathers mothers father.My dad was born in Barbados ,Grandma in Grenada,George apparently in Barbados as well.I am having problems getting any more info about his birth.My dads family (Frith) has a very long history in the T.C.I.Five generations born and died in Grand Turk.If you do have any more pictures or info about G.W.Smith I would very happy to see them. Through bright foreign eyes, I chanced to view the blueness of the skies, the sun's fiery hue calling forth to me in dying ecstacy. **fantastic photos, hope you visit the Philippines once more. This time Palawan, or Cagayan (white water rafting), and more of Negros (like dolphin watching in Bais, Beaching & Spelunking in Sipalay, beaching at the sandbar of Lakawon in Cadiz, Snorkeling in Danjugan Island). In Mindanao, the safe areas are in Davao & Cagayan de Oro, just don't go to Basilan, Tawi-tawi, and Sulu.

Thanks, Terence, it is a bit quieter around here! If the sun ever comes out I'll get out with my camera, but it's done nothing but drizzle since I've got back. I would like to thank you for including a picture of one of Uganda's cultural houses, which reflects the social and cultural life of the peolpe in Uganda. Basing on the comments made by Sarah, Lena and Paddy, they should't be blamed for there comments, just because they all have different thoughts of view and the way they would like their country to be represented in pictures or documentaries. I would believe that an individual as (mrs Serena Bowles) Who has lived in U.k and has never seen such houses, would be intrested to see such and others would also have the same altitude. I would like to inform my fellow Ugandans above that, tourists come to Uganda to see our uniqueness and pay alot of money which contributes to our revenue and that they shold be proud of it. Uganda is said to be the pearl of Africa which is great. Thanks for having made a trip to Uganda and writing about. Jacob

I remember you because I was there the same time when you was diving with the Atlantis I was back again at Atlantis in April this year and gooing back again 29 th of this month. About your question...no problem at all, I am a physician an I do really love what I do but I also love traveling around the world and meeting other cultures, people, etc. along with photography. Hi Serena: I just came across your galleries by chance and suddenly became immersed in them and in particular in you interest in travel and photography....my two passions in life. You have the luxury of traveling all the time....that is great!....I do take time out of my job and travel 3 to 4 months of the year around the world, mostly Africa, South America, Caribbean and pretty soon to Antartica. I have been photographing mostly in the last four years and became a pBase member last month. The more I travel the more addicted I get. Just like you, this year I started venturing on underwater photography as well. I am originally from Dominican Republic and I do visit my family and friends there several times a year, now an excuse to go diving. I am glad your life has turned around to such an exciting adventure and that you are enjoying it so much. I do love my job, but what keeps me inspired is my photography and my next trip to who knows where.... I have already planned four trips for the rest of this year: Namibia, Alaska, El Pantanal, Brazil and Antartica in Feb. of 2006. I have already started planning my trips for 2006 and so far: Masai Mara in Sept. of 2006. Unfortunately, my trips are not more than 2 weeks at a time, and then come back home...but it is not so bad....I love my job as well, but frankly, I whish I could travel and photograph all the time. Sorry for such long message but I felt identified with what you also enjoy (travel and Photography). Have a great life anywhere you might be. Maybe one day we may even come across each other somewhere in.......?? Love your pictures!!...they all tell a story. I think they are even more beautifull if you read about you first. Hello Serena, I saw your note on Photo4Me. I have never serioulsy ever used a camera before as a form of artistic expression. I found my FUJIFilm S3100 at a very good price at Office Depot recently and it was like a whole new world opening up for me. Combine that with the all the new computer skills I have been acquiring this past year and I am off. I am just at the bottom of my creative climb. I have always enjoyed taking pictures before, but the awkwardness and expense of 35mm always put me off. Now I can aim and shoot at anything I like, throw most of it away and start all over again. I am looking forward to learning whatever you can teach me. I have an unhappy little dog waiting for his walk, so I had better get going. Thank you, Leana Bosley

Thanks for the info, hanging on for the s5500 sounds like a good option. I've already got a number of xD cards for my A203, and I really like the fact that they are energy efficient - the batteries last for around 200 shots. Shame you lost your s602...I get the impression you may be treating yourself to the s20pro when that comes out! Serena.

Hi Serena just to follow up the message you left me. the fuji s5000 is due to be replaced by the s5500 and has a 4mill pix sensor. Also the min shutter speed has been increased to 10 sec, the s5000 had 2sec on manual mode, one of the things that drove me to the s7000. it also has lower min iso of 64. the s5500 and s5000 only accept xd picture cards which are more expensive. the s7000 is better and has more creative options..better manual mode, better manual focussing,it also has greater resolution and in some way negates the need for a 10x zoom because you can crop your images more before losing definition. having said that i prefered my s602 that i had before, but i unfortuneatly lost! the s602 has better colour response, and more pleasing film like images imho. the word out on the street is the new s20pro has the same colour response and tones that the s602 had, and costs slightly more than the s7000. it also promises greater dynamic range, and so greater detail in shadows areas. so to sum up, if i was in the market for a new digicam i would go for the s20pro. and if my buget was more limited i would wait and go for the s5500. good luck, and happy shooting. ps it really amazes me what you have done so far with your humble point and shoot. that old adage of its the photographer not the equipment certainly rings true... Serena, I must compliment you on your lovely photos! I am interested in possibly using one of your photos for the cover of my new book coming out on Zimbabwe. The book chronicles the tragedy of the land reforms post 2000. I am an academic, and the book will sell to mainly research libraries; that is, probably 500 copies or less, so I don't stand to make money from this, but I was wondering if your photos are available for this type of use. Dear Serena, Your most welcome to visit my country - The Philippines someday. Im willing to accompany you to some of the beautiful dive sites here if you want. We have the best dive sites in Anilao, Batangas just a few hour drive from Manila, in Puerto Galera, Or. Mindoro and in Tubbataha reef in Palawan. If you like surfing, you may visit Siargao Island in Surigao province in Mindanao. The place is comparable to the best surfing sites in the world! How I wish I can show you samples of my work. You see, Im still using my film-based cameras in my photo work and I think its impossible for me to download them here at pbase. Besides, Im not a registered user of the site. Im a Media Production Specialist at the Department of Trade and Industry in my country and photography is part of my job that also gives additional income to me during my free tim. If on personal assignment outside Manila, I usually shoot beaches, waterfalls, historical landmark, cultural festivities, sunsets and other tourist destinations. I also do product photography, portraiture and industry shots. My photos (mostly slide transparencies) are being used as inputs in the production of tourism brochures, product catalogs and investment magazines which I also produced with my business partner. How about you? Is photography your occupation? You travelled a lot around the globe and I envy you for that. I hope I can do the same someday. Thanks, Kay, you are very kind. I didn't study photography. Basically I'd always quite enjoyed photography, then four years ago I went on a Round the World trip for eleven months. I just had a pentax point-and-shoot Espio camera, and shot 78 rolls of film in that time. When I got home and had them developed (and that was quite a shock to the old bank balance, let me tell you!), I realised that I actually had some wicked photos, so decided to take photography up seriously as a hobby. I borrowed my father's old Pentax K100, and started to learn about exposure times and F-stops - my parents both enjoy photography, so I was able to gather tips from them, as well as support and encouragement. The next step was an SLR camera of my own, a Pentax MZ30, which accompanied me on the trip across the Middle East and Africa. More recently I've ventured into digital, and have a Fujifilm Finepix A203 - which I whole-heartedly recommend if you are looking for a camera economical on batteries which takes great pics - perfect for travelling. My poor old SLR is sitting in the bottom of the wardrobe, feeling most neglected right now. I guess the next logical step will be a digital SLR, as I have been blown away by the ease of digital. For someone like me, who likes to shoot and shoot, it is perfect. Snap away to your heart's desire, review the pictures you have and cull the ones you don't like. Again from a travelling point of view it's wonderful - you get to see all your pics without having to pay through the nose for developing...which can be pretty hit and miss when it comes to quality, and don't have the usual dilema of whether to carry the pictures around or trust them to the post. Anyway, sorry to waffle on. To answer your question, my advice is to snap, snap, snap away, reviewing what you've taken, deciding what you like and what you don't. Looking at sites such as this as well as pictures in magazines is great too, as it helps you develop your style and work out the sort of pictures you want to take. I'd advise finding somewhere local to you, that you can keep going back to - a short walk or drive away - maybe even your garden. Have a day out with your camera, take as many photos and make them as diverse as possible. Get them developed/upload them, review them, see what works and what doesn't. If there are photos you like that you feel you could have taken better then go back there and try to improve on the shot. You will learn an awful lot this way, and be surprised at how quickly the standard of your work improves. Just a final thought - I'd recommend photography to anyone that suffers with seasonal adjustment disorder, and finds themselves getting low in the long, dark winter months. Taking the time to really look at nature, and increase your awareness of the beauty that surrounds us every day but we often overlook, can do an awful lot to keep the blues away - believe me, I know! None the less the prime minister of Lebanon does have the controling shares in the company that is managing the rebuilding and renovation of what is known as the Central District in Beirut. Seeing as how Syria is still occupying much of Lebanese teritory this can be a sensitive issue for many Lebanese. Mostly I wasn't happy about the graffiti on the rusting train carcasses, but at least this one showed some wit.
