Greetings Ian! Thanks for the recent comment you left in 'My Favorites' gallery. To date, I've only got one cloud image posted which can be found here:http://www.pbase.com/sakmd/image/44278322 I've got a folder full of cloud images which still need sorting. However, not many as 'dramatic' in feel as the ones you posted a few days ago. I hope to be able to sort through them soon and have them in their own gallery. Website not operational at present, I'm afraid. The Band is one of the oldest in Yorkshire, I believe, starting in about 1859 - but like Brass Bands everywhere it has had it's ups and downs. Getting up to the Championship section was an exciting rollercoaster, but staying there and retaining enough really committed players is a continuing challenge. Concerts and performances are great fun though and there is very good local support - we have a full hall every time. Inerestingly several ex-players are now Heads of music at our local schools and others play with Hull Phil. As you say, who knows where our youngsters will end up. I am the 'Suey' who so enjoys seeing Chris Hadden's PBase daily pictures. (We were at school together). She recommended your PBase galleries - particularly as we have banding in common. Two of our younger offspring played with Cottingham for years - as it rose up the sections, ending with the Royal Albert Hall, trips to Paris and Lille, the Championship section - and some really marvellous experiences along the way. Husband and I still are involved with box office, front of house and Patrons newsletter and admin (about 100 individual and very loyal Patrons). One 'child' is at Uni now, the other backwards and forwards between Kenya and East Yorkshire, but their experiences with the Band have been very important for them. I am enjoying seeing your galleries - you must have a very observant eye. I liked the display of seeds - I too am a very keen gardener and this is a vision that excites! So many of the band pictures look very familiar and I just admire anyone who has the commitment to produce such marvellous pictures regularly for us all to enjoy. Thank you.

Just use image resize in PS, and set width to 750. Save as maximum size JPG (12). Quality seems to be fine. I wanted it to display without too much delay and to avoid scrolling as much as poss. Seems to work OK :) Also means people can't download and use the original hi-res file without requesting it.... I have to say pbase without braodband would be a bit frustrating!

Forgot to say - I was interested to see you resize to 750ish. We are still on dial-up with no hope of broadband until late 2006, if then!! This means that anything over 300k takes forever to download - and if I go much lower the pictures pixillate (think that's the term) horribly. Chris

low res is short for low resolution. I resize all the images to 750 by whatever. To make it easier to download and it also means people have to ask if they want the original file for anything :) Seems 750 displays about right on the screens for most people.

Here's a snow photograph, just for you. We have about 8in/20cm of the white stuff today. It is somewhat overcast and the light level is not too good but I'm hoping for improvement later on. Chris ;-}

Yep used to cycle the canal towpaths as a youngster! We got lots of visitors too when in Pars, but mainly in the warmer weather )

No I haven't. Only got into banding a few years back when we moved to Chester. Born over that way though in COngleton. Our period in France was obviously not quite as successful as yours. We lived in Saclay (just South), but I worked away alot and my wife never managed the 'small talk' at the school gates :) Be nice to visit again though sometime. So for now I'll watch it through your lens!

No, not a job move - we lived near Paris in the 80's (job location - La Defense) and have spent the interim years waiting to return to France. Moved back (on a permanent basis) in the autumn - fabulous...BTW - Have you come across Bollington Brass Band? Regards, Chris

We have recently moved from just NE of Macclesfield (Bollington) to La Creuse, hence the change in location of photographs, so it's great to see some of Cheshires finest again. I've got a very very cheap tripod - not too tall (600cm or so), but it seems to do the trick, especially low light work. Main thing 've found (after lots of sloping horizons@ is just to keep an eye on it. But since starting a PAD I take a tripod with me, which I wouldn't have before. If it's low light I'll carry it attached to the camera. It is a pain, but makes previously impossible possible :)

Ian, Thanks for the comment on the slanted horizon. I've been tossing around the idea of picking up a tripod, and you have helped in justifying a purchase. Any recommendations for a person that likes to travel lite? Chris
